Sew a skirt
1 day workshop: 10am – 5.30pm
€85 (pattern and materials included)
Next class: Thursday, 2nd October; Saturday, 8th November (FULL)
If you’re relatively new to sewing and want to make your own clothes, this one-day workshop is for you. Please note that this is not a ‘Learn to Sew’ class. You will require a bit of experience with machine sewing.
In this 5-hour workshop you’ll make a pencil skirt in plain calico using a Butterick pattern. The skirt pattern is straightforward and ideal for a one-day workshop. It features a zip, darts, hook & eye fastenings, a choice of waistbands, and a blind hem. Additionally, you’ll trace your pattern onto tissue, leaving your original pattern intact, so that you can make another skirt in your own size later. You’ll learn how to lay out your fabric and how to transfer important pattern markings onto the pattern pieces. As a beginner dressmaker, these are all transferable skills that you will need as you start to make your own clothes.
The skirt that you make in class is not a ‘wearable’ skirt, but rather a ‘toile’ (a practice version) made in inexpensive calico.
The course price includes a genuine Butterick pattern that is yours to keep, plain calico fabric, zip, and other materials you’ll need to complete the skirt. You’ll need to bring your own sewing kit that should include:
Fabric scissors
Small scissors or thread snips
Tape measure
Chalk or other fabric marker
Stitch ripper
Dressmaking pins
Hand sewing needles
If you don’t already have these items, we have a nice little starter kit for sale in the shop.
